Drawing Pompeii: the corpus of the architects of the “Grand Tour”

, by Jean-Michel Colas

The analysis of collections and publications that have been transmitted by the architects of the Grand Tour permits to grasp the challenge that constitutes the representation of an ancient city, which is to be reproduced by drawing. Several Pompeii collections have been examined, in particular notebooks by the “topographer” William Gell, kept in the INHA Library.

A publication is forthcoming : H. Dessales, H. Dessales, Recueils de William Gell. Pompéi publiée et inédite (1801-1829), Paris, Hermann, 2019.
