The Iron Age marks the development of a production economy with regard to agriculture, metalworking, trade and money. It is illustrated by original settlement forms, wooden architecture, sanctuaries and graves with wealthy deposits and art in a complete rupture with Mediterranean classicism. By rereading the Greek and Latin texts in the light of these new data, it will be possible to detail the picture that the Celts had of themselves. Based on highlights stemming from discoveries made during 40 years of archaeological research, this exhibition presents the contribution made by French scholars to our knowledge about this period, which is key to our understanding of the origins of Europe, more particularly of the Celtic and Etrusco-Italic world. Photographic documents provide an overview of the archaeological excavations and the main studies carried out by the ENS or in collaboration with other organisations.
